Most times the answers are clear cut ~ oh, this is that and this is how it would be treated.
Some times, however, the scenario becomes more complex and the lines can become blurred.
In these cases it's crucial for pastors and councils to take the time necessary to think through what is being decided upon and ensure that the church is following the various policies and laws that surround payments to individuals.
Not taking prudent steps beforehand can put the church (and the individual) in jeopardy and in most cases I have seen, it comes with a heavy price. Both financially and in relationships.
I'm thankful that our pastors and administrators desire to do their due diligence and take the time to pick up the phone or send a quick email with their questions!!
Over the coming weeks I'm going to be breaking down into small pieces the subject of payments to individuals, and more extensively about payroll and our obligations as an employer to those we remunerate.
