John Overholt brought us the news that five days into this trip, the team found themselves in the midst of a severe tropical storm. Christine Ashcroft, Patricio and Eliana Romero are in Playas del Coco, which is one of the heaviest hit areas. From what he understands from missionary friends Skip and Belinda Preston, who also live in the area, Internet and phones are not working and so communication right now is not easy. Our Foursquare pastor, who they are working with, cannot get to them because the roads are closed because of the flooding. John was able to check in with Christine on Wednesday morning. They were in good spirits but the forecast is for continued rain, and so the team appreciates your prayers.
In a brief newscast, we found out that at least 100 neighbors of the community of Playas del Coco in Guanacaste are currently being affected by these heavy floods due to the overflow of rivers.Apparently some people are trapped in their homes, businesses and even some in their cars since the streets are now under at least one meter of water.
The heavy rain that has been falling in the area since Tuesday evening and through Wednesday affected not only the community of Playas del Coco, but also other Guanacaste communities like Abangares, Cartagena, Santa Cruz, Huacas, Santa Ana de Belén de Carrillo, Bebedero de Bagaces and Hermosa Beach.
The Foursquare churches in this area are close to the hearts of many of us who have travelled there under John and Debbie's leadership. Let's pray together for the team, that the waters would recede, safety for the residents, and that damage would be minimal.
